Manesi’s life changed forever in 2019 when her daughter tragically passed away, leaving behind her three young children. Despite her own struggles of living in a dilapidated house and working long hours just to try and make ends meet, Manesi immediately stepped in to become the caregiver for her grandchildren.
Living in a small house that was falling apart, Manesi and her grandchildren continued to face constant challenges. During the rainy season last year, the roof leaked badly, and without the funds to replace the plastic sheets, Manesi and her grandchildren had to endure soaking wet nights.
Despite her best efforts to keep the house standing, financial constraints meant repairs were often postponed. The struggle to provide essentials like school uniforms and exercise books for her grandchildren weighed heavily on her.
“For the first time in my life, I am looking forward to sleeping peacefully.”
But today, Manesi’s story is changing.. Thanks to the generosity of people like you, and Habitat for Humanity Great Britain’s partnership with Jersey Overseas Aid (JOA), Manesi is now the proud owner of a brand-new home. Over the course of a week, volunteers from JOA and local artisans worked alongside Habitat Malawi staff to build her home. Starting with the foundation and flooring, the team worked together to lay bricks, build walls, and complete the structure with local roofing experts.
For Manesi, the transformation has been life-changing. No longer will she have to worry about leaks or living conditions that threatened the wellbeing and safety of herself and her grandchildren. Her new home (pictured above) is more than just walls and a roof, it represents safety, stability, and hope for the future.
Manesi and her family are just one example of the many families benefitting from Habitat for Humanity’s efforts in Malawi. Through our global network of supporters, volunteers and partners, we’re creating lasting change – one home, one community at a time.
