Our Statement Regarding the UK Government’s ODA Cut

Habitat for Humanity Great Britain is deeply concerned by the UK Government’s decision to reduce Official Development Assistance (ODA) for international development from 0.5% to 0.3% of gross national income. This move undermines decades of progress made toward alleviating poverty, improving housing conditions, and building resilient communities worldwide.

For many of the world’s most vulnerable communities, robust ODA funding has been crucial. It has enabled projects that not only build safe, decent, and affordable housing but also empower communities to break the cycle of poverty. Reducing this investment compromises these efforts and threatens to reverse hard-won gains in global development.

Our mission—to bring hope and secure homes for those in need—relies on stable, predictable support from international development funding. The announced cut will make it even more challenging to support critical projects that provide lasting, community-led change. We believe that every individual deserves a safe place to call home and that investing in sustainable development is key to a more equitable and stable future for all.

Britain has a long and proud history of supporting international development, playing a key role in tackling global poverty and driving sustainable change. Our commitment has been protected by successive Governments, irrespective of party politics, for decades. This legacy is now at risk. We call on the British public to join us in standing up for global solidarity. Your voice is crucial in urging policymakers to rethink this decision. By coming together, we can demonstrate that communities across the UK demand a government committed to lifting people out of poverty, ensuring safe housing, and building a better future for all. Let us unite in support of sustainable development and advocate for a policy that reflects our shared values of compassion and justice.

Habitat for Humanity Great Britain calls on the UK Government to reconsider this decision and reaffirm its commitment to international solidarity. We urge policymakers, stakeholders, and every concerned citizen to work together in support of policies that prioritise the well-being of all communities, especially those who are most vulnerable.

We remain steadfast in our mission and will continue to advocate for increased support to ensure that safe, decent housing is accessible to everyone, no matter where they live.
